The blaze on East Maltbie Avenue in Suffern was finally brought under control but not until five departments and more than 100 volunteer firefighters from Suffern, Mahwah, Hillburn, Sloatsburg, Tallman and Monsey battled the stubborn blaze. The Suffern and Mahwah police departments responded to the scene quickly to keep onlookers back and to offer assistance. At one point it looked as if the fire was under control but a flare up in the attic kept the blaze alive. Suffern Residence Goes up in Flames

A residence on East Maltbie Avenue between Orange and Washington Avenues went up in flames. The address is believed to be 51 or 53 East Maltbie Avenue. The blaze which started just before 8:00pm sent a huge smoke plume that could be seen and smelled for miles around. Preliminary reports suggest that a car in the driveway might have caught fire first and as flames spread, the house and a neighboring tree quickly caught fire as the wind fanned the flames. The Suffern Volunteer Fire Department arrived within minutes followed quickly by units from Mahwah, Tallman, Sloatsburg, Monsey and Hillburn.…
