A Flurry of Generosity Despite Postponement by Blizzard Alert: NYC Business & Labor Awards Dinner Banks a Record $1.25 Million for Friends of Saint Dominic’s
John J. Murphy, Business Manager, Plumbers Local Union No. 1, and John A. Thomann, Vice President/General Manager, Turner Interiors, Receive Dinner’s Highest Honors for Philanthropy
BLAUVELT, N.Y. , Feb. 17, 2015 – Despite having to be postponed two days because of the New York Metro Area record blizzard that never happened, Friends of Saint Dominic’s received its own record flurry of generosity at the 34th Annual Business & Labor Awards Dinner. The Blauvelt, N.Y.-based nonprofit agency received a record-breaking $1,252,195 from the Dinner, which was attended by over 1,100 business and labor union leaders and executives in the construction, development and real estate industry. The dinner, originally scheduled for January 27 at The Waldorf-Astoria, was held there instead on January 29 because Mayor de Blasio and Gov. Cuomo issued a no-drive directive for the metro area because of the forecasted blizzard.
At the Dinner, John J. Murphy, Business Manager, Plumbers Local Union No. 1, received the honorable Francis J. P. McHale Memorial Award for his commitment to philanthropy. John A. Thomann, Vice President/General Manager, Turner Interiors, was recognized with the prestigious Victory Award for his commitment to charitable giving and long-time support of the Friends of Saint Dominic’s. Mr. Thomann could not be present at the Dinner so his brother Andrew Thomann accepted the award on his behalf.
New York Yankees analyst, John Flaherty, a former Yankees catcher, served as the Dinner’s master of ceremonies. Sr. Margaret Flood, O.P., President of Friends of St. Dominic’s, expressed gratitude and thanks to the room full of supporters for their continued generosity in helping Saint Dominic’s Home.
Lead host was Eugene Peter White, who has taken over the reins as Chairman of the Dinner Committee from his father John T. White, who continues as Chairman of the Friends of Saint Dominic’s Board and Honorary Chairman of the Dinner Committee. The Dinner Committee includes executives from more than 25 leading companies and unions in the construction, development and real estate industry.
Eugene White expressed his thanks and admiration to all the dinner supporters, attendees and sponsors, especially the dinner underwriters: NYC Carpenter Relief & Charity Fund, Building Contractors Association, Greater NY LECET, Nastasi & Associates, Jacobsen & Company, Admore Air Conditioning Corp., RB Samuels, Turner Construction, Structure Tone, John T. & Eileen White Charitable Foundation, NYS Laborers, Brookfield Office Properties, B & G Electrical Contractors and Hunt Electric Corp.
