Over the years many people have compared the Village of Suffern to both Mayberry, the fictional town in The Andy Griffith Show and Bedford Falls, the fictional town in It’s A Wonderful Life.
Apparently a local drunk agrees with the Mayberry reference as, like Otis, the Mayberry town drunk, he managed to find his own way to the Suffern Police Department where he was locked up for the night.
At approximately 2:15am a Suffern dispatcher noticed 27 year old Juan Alvarez Saaver of 6 John St., Spring Valley, NY on the surveillance camera wandering around the police compound.
Saaver drove his vehicle into a secure area in the rear of Suffern PD where the patrol cars are parked The suspect got out of his car and start walking around a clearly marked secure police parking area.
An officer in the area responded and found the defendant in his vehicle attempting to turn around in the lot at which time he stopped him and found him to be intoxicated. He was placed under arrest for DWI and upon being processed refused to take a breathalyzer test.
He was found to have two prior DWI’s this year in Rockland County, both of which are pending in court. Unlike Otis, the defendant was not allowed to release himself when he sobered up; instead he was sent to the Rockland County Jail where Immigration & Customs Enforcement placed a detainer on him as he was found to be in the United States illegally.
